The economy and labor market performance in the first quarter of 2022: mixed signals

The number of cases increased rapidly in most provinces and cities in quarter one, owing to the faster spread of the BA.2 variant of the Omicron strain, but the number of severe cases decreased due to the country's high rate of vaccine coverage. According to the General Statistical Office (GSO), GDP grew by 5.03% in the first quarter of 2022 compared to the same period last year, which is higher than the growth rates of 4.72% in the first quarter of 2021 and 3.66% in the first quarter of 2020, but still lower than the growth rate of 6.85% in the first quarter of 2019.
